Sample ID #: 32
Possible ID: Penicillium
Classification:
Phylum Ascomycota
Class Eurotiomycetes
Order Eurotiales
Family Trichocomaceae
Species?
Location:
This sample was collected off of a moldy strawberry allowed to mold for a week in a petri dish.
Isolation and culturing methods:
A square section (around 0.5 x 0.5 cm) of the primary mold sample was extracted from its substrate and cultured on a malt extract agar plate for two weeks. A small section of the hyphae of this culture was then extracted and placed onto a MEA plate to grow a pure culture.
Description of macroscopic and microscopic characteristics:
Hyphae without clamp connections. Hyphae grow above the agar, are white in color, and are 2-5 um wide. Situated on top of the white hyphae are green conidia spores 1-4 um in diameter. The surface texture is fuzzy, hyphae are thicker towards the site of inoculation and become thinner towards the periphery.
