Flavoparmelia caperata

Possible ID Flavoparmelia caperata

Classification:

Phylum Ascomycota

Class Lecanoromycetes

Order Lecanorales

Family Parmeliaceae

Isolation and culturing method :

The sample was found on Dales Ridge trail in Central Pennsylvania. The specimen was found on a piece of bark on a dying hardwood tree. There were various types of fungi also cohabitating the dying tree. These lichens were found spanning the entire height of the tree, and were found on all sides of the tree. A small part of the tree bark was removed and brought back to the lab for inspection and photographs.

Culture appearance and growth:

The fungi are foliose lichens. They are light green in color and range in size from ¼ inch to 1 inches wide. They are mostly circular. The lichens themselves look rough, but do not feel too hard. It was semi-difficult to extract a single lichen from the bark. The lichens had no significant smell.

Spore production

No spore produced or found, sample was too old to obtain spore print and no spores were found on the fruit body itself
