Trametes hirsuta

Phylum: Basidomycete Class: Agaricomycete Order: Polyporales Family: Polyporaceae Genus: Trametes Species: T. hirsuta Collection Location: This mushroom was collected on April 9th at Dale’s Ridge natural area outside of Lewisburg, PA. The sample was collected off of a decomposing log of a hardwood tree. Description: T. hirsuta is a white-rot, polypore mushroom that is a saphrobe on the deadwood of hardwood trees. The mushroom caps grow on top of each other and make irregular half circles connected to its substrate. The pileus is hairy and the lamellae is pored. Concentric zones varying in color are apparent on the pileus as […]

Pezizomycete sp.

Sample #35 Possible ID: Pezizomycete sp. Classification: Phylum Ascomycota Subphylum Pezizomycotina Class: Pezizomycete   Isolation and Culturing Methods: This sample was collected during an air spore drop collection in the Grove on Bucknell’s campus. The spore drop plate was left outside to collect spores for seven minutes. This sample was extracted from the spore drop plate and put on a separate MEA plate.   Description of macroscopic and microscopic characteristics: Hyphae regularly septate, without clamp connections, 4-5 um wide. Hyphae are white and are fuzzy. They grow densely on the plate, into the agar and up towards the plate lid. Hyphae […]

Ascomycete sp.

Sample #34 Possible ID: Classification: Ascomycete sp. Phylum Ascomycota   Isolation and Culturing Methods: This sample was collected during an air spore drop collection outside of the O’leary geology building. The plates were situated under an overhang next to a mulched flower bed. The spore drop plate was left outside to collect spores for three hours. Spores were collected on 02/26/18. This sample was extracted from the spore drop plate and put on a separate MEA plate for one week. Then this process was repeated to help isolate the sample on a separate MEA plate. Description of macroscopic and microscopic […]

Penicillium

Sample ID #: 32 Possible ID: Penicillium Classification: Phylum Ascomycota Class Eurotiomycetes Order Eurotiales Family Trichocomaceae Species? Location: This sample was collected off of a moldy strawberry allowed to mold for a week in a petri dish. Isolation and culturing methods: A square section (around 0.5 x 0.5 cm) of the primary mold sample was extracted from its substrate and cultured on a malt extract agar plate for two weeks. A small section of the hyphae of this culture was then extracted and placed onto a MEA plate to grow a pure culture. Description of macroscopic and microscopic characteristics: Hyphae […]

Pezizomycotina species

Sample 33 Possible ID: species in Pezizomycotina   Classification: Phylum Ascomycota Subphylum Pezizomycotina   Isolation and Culturing Methods: This sample was collected from a soil sample outside of the biology building on Bucknell’s campus on March 3rd, 2018. The sample of soil was directly plated onto a MEA plate and cultured for two weeks. The sample was extracted from the soil sample plate and cultured on a new plate and grew for one week. This process was repeated an additional time to ensure its isolation.     Description of macroscopic and microscopic characteristics: Hyphae regularly septate, without clamp connections, 1-2 […]

Panellus sp.

Possible ID: Panellus sp. Classification: Phylum: Basidiomycota Class: Agaricomycetes Order: Agaricales Family: Mycenaceae Genus: Panellus Location: These mushrooms were collected in Pennsylvania woods on April 2nd off of a hardwood tree species. Pluerotoid mushrooms are saprobic and grow in clusters. Description: The fruit bodies are small, grow on wood (pleurotoid), have light brown gills that radiate outward from the stipe attachment, and form kidney shaped caps that are are brown along the outside and beige towards the center of the cap. The stipe is connected to the side of the cap and multiple mushrooms grow in clusters on top of […]

Classification: Phylum: Ascomycota Class: Eurotiomycetes Order: Eurotiales Family:Trichocomaceae Genus: Talaromyces   Location and habitat: This sample was collected during an air spore drop collection outside of the O’leary geology building. The plates were situated under an overhang next to a mulched flower bed. The spore drop plate was left outside to collect spores for three hours. Spores were collected on 02/26/18. Isolation and culturing methods: This sample was isolated from the air spore drop plate it initially grew on and transferred onto a a MEA plate on 03/03/18. After two weeks, a small […]
