Possible ID: Trichoderma sp.
Classification:
Phylum: Ascomycota
Subphylum: Pezizomycotina
Class: Sordariomycetes
Order: Hypocreales
Family: Hypocreaceae
Isolation and Culturing Methods:
This culture was isolated from mold growing on a piece of cooked chicken left out at room temperature for several days. Specimen was allowed to grow in malt extract agar + chloramphenicol (MEA+C) for one week at room temperature, then hyphae that were not threatened by contamination were moved to a new sterile MEA+C plate and allowed to grow for another week.
Culture Appearance on Growth:
Hyphae radiate from the center in a soft white layer with minimal density. As the ring of active growth expands, older hyphae in the center begin to look like pilled cotton while the active growth remains evenly distributed. Hyphae diameter is approximately 5 um, septate are present but difficult to determine regularity, and no clamp connections were observed.
Spore Production:
Conidiophores grow in an uncrowded branching pattern and are anywhere from 35 to 65 um in length. Phialides are flask shaped, arranged in a whorled pattern, and range from 10 to 20 um long. Spores appear to be light green, globose, and 3 um in diameter.
