Aspergillus

Possible ID: Aspergillus

Classification:

Phylum Ascomycota

Class Eurotiomycetes

Order Eurotiales

Family Trichocomaceae

Genus Aspergillus

Isolation and culture methods:

Isolated from a plate that was left outside for 2 hours in the Grove Park, Lewisburg PA. The sample was extracted from a plate with many different species on it and it took many times to isolate this organism into a pure culture. It took about 4 weeks to finally obtain a pure culture in a sample that was grown in room temperature.

Culture appearance and growth:

The surface of the culture is a dark green to brown powdery substance relating to that of a mold. The culture would grow in splotches each distancing itself from others.  The growth on this sample from week to week was very slow and it took multiple weeks for the sample to overtake the plate entirely

Spore Production:

The spore of the fungus is about 3-5 x 3-5um and are mostly spherical in shape . The spores are a green to light green color and are collected around a large conidia with one stalk.
