Possible ID: Trichoderma
Classification:
Phylum: Ascomycota
Class: Sordariomycetes
Order: Hypocreales
Family: Trichocomaceae
Isolation and culturing methods:
Isolated from soil taken from outside of the gym. It had recently rained and the soil was hardening but still moist. Sample was obtained from serial dilution B onto a plate with malt extract agar. Plates were stored at room temperature for a week then extracts were transferred to a new plate in order to obtain a pure culture.
Culture appearance and growth:
Fungi seemed to be embedded in the agar. Center was a dark green with white rings. Hymenium was growing along the surface of the agar. Semi-slow growth rate (plate not completely covered after 2 weeks with ascospores being produced). Hyphae about 0.2-0.5 microns wide, septate, no clamp connections.
Spore production:
Ascus are 4.1-4.5 x 4.9-5.3 microns and develop in the dark green rings of the plate. Ascus are not clearly separated from the agar. Appear black or dark green to naked eye, slight coloration when under the microscope. Ascospores are fairly round, slight oval shape, 0.6-0.9 x 0.8-1.0 microns.
