Possible ID: Penicillium
Classification: Dikarya
Phylum: Ascomycota
Class: Eurotiomycetes
Order: Eurotiales?
Isolation and culturing methods:
Isolated from clementine mold. Sample was placed on malt extract agar + chloramphenicol and allowed to grow for a week. Pure sample was obtained by sectioning a small sample of the growth onto MEA plate.
Culture appearance and growth:
Surface texture appears dark green and fuzzy, with white outer edges 1wk into growth. Specimen becomes dark green with grainy texture 3wks into growth, maintaining a thin white outer ring. Hyphae measure 2.5-4um wide, regularly septate with no clamp connections. Hyphae seem to contain an array of distinct organelles, aligned in succession, pictured below.
Spore production:
Spores measure 4-5um x 7.5-12.5um and appear football-shaped.
ETA (4/23/18): PCR sequencing and BLAST analysis indicates this species is actually in the genus cladosporium, of class Dothideomycetes. Its spores are thought to be involved in seasonal allergies.
