Trametes pubescens

Possible ID: Trametes pubescens   Classification: Phylum: Basidiomycota Class: Agaricomycetes Order: Polyporales Family: Polyporaceae Genus: Trametes   Collection location: Trametes pubescens is a very common and widely distributed fungus in North America.1 The fungal samples my group and I collected on April 9th, 2018, were found on a branch from a hardwood tree in Dale’s Ridge trail in Lewisburg, PA.   Fruiting body appearance and growth: Collected fruiting bodies were growing outwards from the end of a hardwood branch, presenting very short lateral stipes. Fungal samples were clustered together and appeared to be laterally fusing with each other at the […]

Cladosporium sp.

Possible ID: Cladosporium sp.   Classification: Phylum: Ascomycota Class: Dothideomycetes Order: Capnodiales Family: Davidiellaceae   Isolation and Culturing Methods: This specimen was isolated from soil samples in the Rooke Greenhouse, from a planter pot housing a Chenopodium oahuense plant. The soil was given a Nitrogen/Phosphorus blend four weeks prior to collection, and the greenhouse is kept at 26*C, >20% humidity and nightly UV light treatments. Specimen was grown in malt extract agar + chloramphenicol (MEA+C) for one week at room temperature, then hyphae that were not threatened by contamination were moved to a new sterile MEA+C plate and allowed to […]

Schizophyllum commune

Possible ID: Schizophyllum sp., probably Schizophyllum commune   Classification: Phylum: Basidiomycota Class: Agaricomycetes Order: Agaricales Family: Schizophyllaceae Genus: Schizophyllum   Collection location: Schizophyllum commune is a very common and widely distributed fungus in North America.1 The fungal samples my group and I collected on April 9th, 2018, were found near each other attached to a decaying hardwood tree log along Dale’s Ridge trail in Lewisburg, PA.   Fruiting body appearance and growth: Collected fruiting bodies lacked stipes and were pretty small, measuring around 1-1.2 cm in width. The grayish white pilei of the fungal samples had a somewhat shell or […]

Trametes hirsuta

Phylum: Basidomycete Class: Agaricomycete Order: Polyporales Family: Polyporaceae Genus: Trametes Species: T. hirsuta Collection Location: This mushroom was collected on April 9th at Dale’s Ridge natural area outside of Lewisburg, PA. The sample was collected off of a decomposing log of a hardwood tree. Description: T. hirsuta is a white-rot, polypore mushroom that is a saphrobe on the deadwood of hardwood trees. The mushroom caps grow on top of each other and make irregular half circles connected to its substrate. The pileus is hairy and the lamellae is pored. Concentric zones varying in color are apparent on the pileus as […]

Pezizomycete sp.

Sample #35 Possible ID: Pezizomycete sp. Classification: Phylum Ascomycota Subphylum Pezizomycotina Class: Pezizomycete   Isolation and Culturing Methods: This sample was collected during an air spore drop collection in the Grove on Bucknell’s campus. The spore drop plate was left outside to collect spores for seven minutes. This sample was extracted from the spore drop plate and put on a separate MEA plate.   Description of macroscopic and microscopic characteristics: Hyphae regularly septate, without clamp connections, 4-5 um wide. Hyphae are white and are fuzzy. They grow densely on the plate, into the agar and up towards the plate lid. Hyphae […]

Ascomycete sp.

Sample #34 Possible ID: Classification: Ascomycete sp. Phylum Ascomycota   Isolation and Culturing Methods: This sample was collected during an air spore drop collection outside of the O’leary geology building. The plates were situated under an overhang next to a mulched flower bed. The spore drop plate was left outside to collect spores for three hours. Spores were collected on 02/26/18. This sample was extracted from the spore drop plate and put on a separate MEA plate for one week. Then this process was repeated to help isolate the sample on a separate MEA plate. Description of macroscopic and microscopic […]

Xylaria sp.

Possible ID: Xylaria sp.   Classification: Phylum: Ascomycota Class: Sordariomycetes Order: Xylariales Family: Xylariaceae Genus: Xylaria   Isolation and culturing methods: Isolated from an English Ivy leaf that had been ripped into pieces, soaked in 70% EtOH for approximately 3 minutes, rinsed in autoclaved distilled water, and placed on a malt extract agar plate on February 12th of 2018. Initially, there was no growth from this endophytic fungi for the first couple of weeks. However, after being stored at room temperature for 3 weeks, the endophytic fungal sample burst out of the English Ivy leaf bits and actually began to […]

Sordariaceae sp.

Possible ID: Sordariaceae sp.   Classification: Phylum: Ascomycota Subphylum: Pezizomycotina *Class: Sordariomycetes *Order: Sordariales *Family: Sordariaceae   Isolation and culturing methods: Isolated from a plate placed under an air vent in the men’s bathroom on the third floor of the Rooke Biology building for around 10 minutes on February 19th of 2018. After being stored at room temperature for two weeks along with a multitude of other fungi, hyphae of the sample were taken from this plate and placed onto its own malt extract agar plate. After Spring break on March 19th of 2018, hyphae were removed from this plate […]
