Penicillium

Sample ID #: 32 Possible ID: Penicillium Classification: Phylum Ascomycota Class Eurotiomycetes Order Eurotiales Family Trichocomaceae Species? Location: This sample was collected off of a moldy strawberry allowed to mold for a week in a petri dish. Isolation and culturing methods: A square section (around 0.5 x 0.5 cm) of the primary mold sample was extracted from its substrate and cultured on a malt extract agar plate for two weeks. A small section of the hyphae of this culture was then extracted and placed onto a MEA plate to grow a pure culture. Description of macroscopic and microscopic characteristics: Hyphae […]

Sordariomycete

Possible ID: Sordariomycota sp. Classification: Ascomycota Class: Sordariomycetes     Isolation and culturing method: Isolated from specimen container that was left outside for 2 hours in The Grove Park, Lewisburg PA. The sample was then grown in culture for 2 weeks and then removed from the plate and placed into a container for growth on its own. These plates were in a room at room temperature and allowed to grow off of Agar plates for sustenance. After trying this process 2 times the pure culture was finally arrived at a pure culture.   Culture appearance and growth: The culture appears […]

Schizophyllum

ID: Schizophyllum   Phylum: Basidiomycota Class: Agaricomycetes Order: Agaricales Family: Schizophyllaceae   Collected from Turtle Creek Park on April 2nd. It had recently snowed and the ground was covered. Specimen was found on wood and taken back to lab for identification.   The Fruiting body appeared to have gills on its underside. However, upon further examination under a dissecting microscope, gills turned out to be more like “folds”. This is an identifying feature in the Schizophyllum genus. Fruiting body was small and fan shaped, covered in small white hairs. Genus tends to be sabrobic on decaying wood, and occasionally parasitic […]
