Unidentifiable fruit body

Possible ID: Uknown   Isolation and culturing methods: This fruiting body was collected on April 2nd in Turtle Creek Park in Lewisburg, PA. It was collected from a branch that had fallen. It was placed in a paper bag and brought back to the lab to further analyze and identify.   Culture appearance and growth It has a plane pileus shape and it has entire pileus margin. It has a glabrous pileus texture. The lamellae attachment is andante. It is a shelf fungus which does not have a stipe The hymenium is pored. Additionally, it is white and thick; it […]

Cladosporium

Possible ID: Cladosporium   Classification: Phylum Ascomycota Class Dothideomycete Order Canodiales Family Davidiellacaeae   Isolation and culturing methods: Isolated from an agar plate that was placed near a vent in the Rooke Science at Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA). This plate was used when we were collecting spores to differentiate from ecosystems inside and outside the lab.  Plates were incubated at 20 degrees Celsius for a week or more. Then, a small volume of hyphae was excised for the agar and transferred to achieve a pure culture.   Culture appearance and growth Before the was pure cultured, it formed one large […]

Trichothecium

Possible ID:  Trichothecium   Classification: Phylum Acscomycota Class Sordariomycete Order Hypocreales Family Incertae sedis   Isolation and culturing methods: Isolated from an agar plate that was used for a prior lab and was labled “TriB.” However, because it was not pure, Trichothecium grew on it. A small volume of hyphae of this was excised for the agar and transferred to achieve a pure culture.   Culture appearance and growth The culture looked pink/rosy with white hyphae growing out of it. The hyphae are around 4-5 micrometers wide.   Spore production The spores are enclosed in conidiospores around 12 microns long […]

Botrytis sp.

Possible ID. Botrytis sp. Classification: Phylum Ascomycota Class Leotiomycete Order Helotiales Family Sclerotiniaceae   Isolation and culturing method : A moldy strawberry was removed from the fridge and a small amount of the material growing on the fruit was transferred to a M+C agar plate. The plate was left at room temperature for one week. A small section of the hyphae was then removed and plated on another M+C agar plate to produce a pure culture. Strawberry was grown in California. Culture appearance and growth: Culture is powdery and white. Grow relatively fast, completely covering an agar plate in one […]

Cladosporium sp.

Possible ID Cladosporium sp. Classification: Phylum Ascomycete Class Dothideomycete Order Capnodiales Family Davidiellaceae   Isolation and culturing method : From soil found on uphill entrance of the LC. Small amount of soil centrifuged with water, plated, and grown at room temperature. Specific culture removed from plate by taking a clump of hyphae, replated four times on M+C agar plate to obtain pure culture.   Culture appearance and growth: Small, typically ½ inch circular formations, growing multiple on a plate. Individuals are septate, and possess no clamp connections. Hyphal, grows above medium not in or under. Groups are dark green and […]

Panellus sp.

Possible ID: Panellus sp. Classification: Phylum: Basidiomycota Class: Agaricomycetes Order: Agaricales Family: Mycenaceae Genus: Panellus Location: These mushrooms were collected in Pennsylvania woods on April 2nd off of a hardwood tree species. Pluerotoid mushrooms are saprobic and grow in clusters. Description: The fruit bodies are small, grow on wood (pleurotoid), have light brown gills that radiate outward from the stipe attachment, and form kidney shaped caps that are are brown along the outside and beige towards the center of the cap. The stipe is connected to the side of the cap and multiple mushrooms grow in clusters on top of […]

Talaromyces sp.

Sample #: 31 Possible ID: Talaromyces sp. Classification: Phylum: Ascomycota Class: Eurotiomycetes Order: Eurotiales Family:Trichocomaceae Genus: Talaromyces   Location and habitat: This sample was collected during an air spore drop collection outside of the O’leary geology building. The plates were situated under an overhang next to a mulched flower bed. The spore drop plate was left outside to collect spores for three hours. Spores were collected on 02/26/18. Isolation and culturing methods: This sample was isolated from the air spore drop plate it initially grew on and transferred onto a a MEA plate on 03/03/18. After two weeks, a small […]

Absidia

Possible ID: Absidia   Classification: Phylum: Zygomycota Class: Mucoromycotina Order: Mucorales Family: Cunninghamellaceae   Isolation and culturing methods: Isolated from soil taken from outside of the gym. It had recently rained and the soil was hardening but still moist. Sample was obtained through serial dilution C onto a plate with malt extract agar. Plates were stored at room temperature for a week then hyphae was transferred to a new plate in order to obtain a pure culture.   Culture appearance and growth: White hymenium growing upwards on the surface. Loosely spread across the surface. Fast growth rate (plate covered in […]

Trichoderma

Possible ID:  Trichoderma   Classification: Phylum: Ascomycota Class: Sordariomycetes Order: Hypocreales Family: Trichocomaceae   Isolation and culturing methods: Isolated from soil taken from outside of the gym. It had recently rained and the soil was hardening but still moist. Sample was obtained from serial dilution B onto a plate with malt extract agar. Plates were stored at room temperature for a week then extracts were transferred to a new plate in order to obtain a pure culture. Culture appearance and growth: Fungi seemed to be embedded in the agar. Center was a dark green with white rings. Hymenium was growing […]

Podospora

Possible ID: Podospora   Classification: Phylum Ascomycota Class Sordariomycete Order Sordariales Family Lasiosphaericae   Isolation and culturing methods: Isolated from a soil sample that was taken from the soil right outside of the ELC at Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA). The soil sample was serially diluted by water and then plated on an agar plate. The plate was untouched for a week and then a small amount of hyphae was taken and put on a smaller agar plate to obtain a pure culture. This extraction of hyphae was done twice to reassure that it was a pure culture and was free […]
